Sovereign Tower

Modernization of Railing System with Glass Railing

Sovereign Tower is a mixed-used building in Atlanta, Georgia. The award-winning building stands at 50 stories and icon as the tallest residential building in Georgia. Original construction was completed on the Sovereign Building in 2008, but due to issues with the post-tension system due in part of the existing faulty railing system and its deficient installation method, the residential balconies required a full renovation starting in 2019.

Poma was brought into the project to replace the existing railing system with its G602 Post Mounted Glass System featuring its PATENTED corrosion resistant SS Pin system, however, shortly after it was determined that many conflicts existing with the existing railing post pockets and the existing post-tensioned cables. In light of these conflicts, retrofitting the existing railings with a post mounted system would have resulted in post placements shifting from floor to floor resulting in unpleasantly aesthetic misalignment, and would have also required extensive ground penetrating rebar and further resources to locate all existing PT tendons. Ultimately the Poma team was able to recommend the revolutionary postless Infinity Glass Railing® System, featuring its PATENTED corrosion resistant anchoring system with the ability of lateral anchor adjustability. The ability of the anchor to freely slide inside of POMA’s proprietary tracking system allowed the railing system to work with the varying PT cable conditions, offering seamless architectural execution while also providing unobstructed breathtaking views of the Atlanta skyline.

Poma provided customized templates for each floor prior to production to layout anchor point locations and determine if they needed to be shifted in order to avoid a conflict in the slab. One elevation of the building had balconies with a greater slope and a higher wind resistance requirement than the others, but this system allowed use of the same system and the engineering behind the revolutionary anchors allowed for consistency when there were uneven concrete slab edges.

The project was a success, & the residents were very happy with the final Infinity Rail system.
